Here's some handy links to help you plan an Island vacation away from LA!

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
Costa Rica, South America

Kauai, Hawaii

Places to Stay

Moloa'a Bay Pole House
Located on the northeast shore of Kauai is Moloa'a Bay, a secluded little, private bay that boasts true island living.  The Moloa'a Bay Pole House is not in a resort community.  Rather the house is surrounded by other houses inhabited by locals.  This romantic and peaceful beach house offers an amazing ocean view from the wraparound Lanai and all the "getting away from it all" that you could possibly hope for in a vacation house rental.

Oahu Top

Halekulani
The best amenities such as: Kohler Deep Soaking Tub, Flat Screen TV, Separte shower, DVD/CD entertainment center.   Not the most affordable on the island, but at the rates you could pay elsewhere, you really should consider the Halekulani - or end up regretting that you only ATE at the Halekulani like our FunLA staff travel authority!

Maui Top

Maui, Hawaii

Here are three ways we would do a Maui family friendly vacation with kids.

A) We would fly in to the Kahului Airport.  We would stay for 2 or 3 days in Paia.  Groceries are cheaper as are meals out in Paia - even organic.  Three days would give everyone enough time to recharge for the next bit of the trip - the drive to Hana.  Drive to Hana, which is the hardest part with the youngin's.  Stay in Hana for 2 days.  Drive back to Paia or perhaps to the west side of the island and stay a night or two in a hotel or condo there.  It is important with kids to have access to a washer and dryer if you don't want to pack a lot.

B) Splash completely out and stay at one of the resorts which have kid activities and clubs.  There are several of these on the West Side of the Island in Ka'anapali. Only problem with hotel/resort stays is that you have to pack more or find a Laundromat.

C) Camping and hiking the whole time with the last day or two being spent at a condo or hotel to properly clean up and relax before the flight home.

The Road to Hana is great.  You probably should only plan on seeing the first one or two waterfalls (mile marker 10 and 11) if you are traveling with kids under 4 years of age.

Places to Stay

Paia

Blue Tile House
http://www.beachvacationmaui.com/
The upstairs room overlooks the ocean. Clearly the best room in the place. You get a private beach, steps away from your door.  You're close to "downtown" Paia, which is really cute and healthy-folk oriented.  The house is close to the road that takes you to the other side of the island, so you can go hotel slumming.

Hana

Hotel Hana Maui
Seaside cottages close to the pool are great.  www.hotelhanamaui.com

Ka'anapalli

Aston Ka'anapali Shores.  Individually owned condos in a hotel setting on the beach.  Very reasonable rates.  Family Friendly.  Restaurant, two pools,  sundries shop, flower shop, gift store, and surf shop.  Across the street from a large grocery store and a couple of restaurants.

Ka'anapali Alii Condos
Kid Friendly, located on the beach, pool and walking path. Daily maid service, concierge, and room service. Elite condos if you really want to splash out. It's in the middle of Ka'anapali beach and only one hotel away from Whaler's Village.

Hyatt Regency Ka'anapali
Great service, adult pool with swim up bar and kids pool with a little slide. Camp Hyatt is great for the kiddos.  Walking distance to Whalers Village for entertainment, restaurants and shopping. Walking path along the beach for strolls. Koi fish in the lobby that the kids can feed in the morning. Great customer service.  Family, Kid-friendly - also great for couples. The concierge can hook you up with great prices on anything on the island.

Sands of Kahana http://sands-ofkahana.com
4289 Lower Honoapiilani Rd., Lahaini, Maui, HI 96761
Time-share condo's located on the West Coast of Maui between Ka'anapali and Kapalua. Just a short 15 minute drive from the sights and shopping in the historic town of Lahaina.

Big Island Top

Big Island, Hawaii

Kona

Na Hale O Keauhou Condo  Very reasonable rates.

Keauhou
Keauhou is away from the noise and traffic of Alii Drive. Two fine places for lodging are Kanaloa, which offers a golf course, and the Kona Coast Resort. Both are spacious and fairly-priced.

Kailua-Kona
If you want to be a little free-spirited and touristy meaning you want to walk around, shop, dine, and sit and look at the ocean, but not necessarily go swimming in it go for the condos in Kailua-Kona.   You won't want to swim there due to the lava rock ocean front, excepting White Sands (very rough waves) and Kahaluu Beach (kid-friendly).  Resorts and condos here will usually have pools. Also, a little more 'civilized' meaning you'll find stores you recognize for grocery shopping and dry goods.  All beachfront property in Kailua-Kona is public, meaning no one can block your access to use the beach, even in front of their house.

If you want to roll out of bed and head to the beach and swim, go for Mauna Lani and Hapuna where its sandier and less rocky. Hapuna is a state park, so you can also stay in Waikoloa condos and go to Hapuna.

Kahaluu Beach
Kahaluu Beach is packed, touristy, but offers good snorkeling and lots of sea turtle sightings. They say the menehunes (leprechauns) built the seawall that surrounds this beach for King Kamehameha. It's great for kids because of the seawall.

Honaunau
Honaunau, which is Kona coffee country and is south of Kailua-Kona is a nice area for condo-type rentals and B&B's.

Bora Bora Top

Bora Bora

On Bora Bora there is not much to do outside the hotel compound area and the beach.

Pearl Beach Resort Located on Motu Tevairoa facing the island of Bora Bora, this resort offers a place to luxuriate in the peace and tranquility of the magical surroundings with unsurpassed views on the world renowned Mount Otemanu. Ask about the over water bungalows and the private garden pool suites featuring a private plunge pool and outdoor shower.

Moorea Island
Moorea Island is close to the main Island of Papeete (like Catalina to Los Angeles) and they have a regular Ferry all day. You can go to the main island to look around after seeing all of Moorea.  There are a few places to hike and explore and some very beautiful sites.  Also, you avoid being flown into Papeete and then flown on to Bora Bora.  You will see more of the locals on Moorea.  The water is great on both locations, but overall your costs will be less with a Moorea vacation over Bora Bora.
