Greve Top

Greve, Italy

Greve in Chianti is the main town in the Chianti Classico region.  Greve is the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, who discovered the bay of New York in the 14th century. The town’s charming 19th century square is the site of a weekly market, a delightful butcher shop, a frame shop, antiques store with fine linens and amazing jewelry store.

Learn more about Etruscan civilization by visiting another charming wine town, Castellina in Chianti.  Enjoy more fabulous wine at the Rocca della Macie winery.

Visit the castle of Vicciomaggio, visit a quaint Chianti village, visit a family owned winery with its cellars and wine tasting, do a walking tour of Siena and visit San Gimignano.

Places to Stay

Villa Bordoni
Located in Greve in Chianti about 25 Kilometers south of Florence, this extraordinary but humble villa is a real find.  There are 10 rooms, all remodeled in a splendid mixture of antiques and modern fixtures.  The staff is delightful and top notch from the personable owners to the sommelier, the reservations manager and of course the Villas on site chef.  The food is some of the best we've enjoyed.

Venice Top

Venice, Italy

The city of Venice is one of a kind.  Neither photos or movies depicting the city can do it justice. Built upon 117 small islands, the city has about 150 canals and nearly 400 bridges. There is not a car to be found in the city.  You must walk or take a water taxi or water bus to get to your destination.

A Venicecard is an unlimited ticket to drive or sail with ACTV, the local transport company. ACTV-bus number 5 is just outside and goes from the mainland to Piazzale Roma in Venice.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a fabulous museum.  Hosting an impressive collection of modern art. Peggy Guggenheim bought this Venetian home (now the museum) in an attempt to battle the growth of her fortune.

Places to Stay

Florence Top

Florence (Firenze), Italy

The Medici family moved into Florence during the Middle Ages attracting goldsmiths and artists to sell to the powerful family.  These craftsmen exist even through this day. Visit Florence's world-famous art museums, shop in the amazing fabric and jewelry stores and enjoy Tuscan cuisine in traditional trattoria's..  Spend sometime on Ponte Vecchio or "Old Bridge" shopping for jewelry and other great Italian finds.

With a car you can travel into Umbria and visit slightly less crowded cities excepting Assisi.

To See

Bargello sculpture museum

Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
Houses Michelangelo's second Pieta, Donatello's Mary Magdalene, and other significant sculptures by Donatello and della Robbia.

Live like a Local.  Take a pre-dawn to post Jog around town and watch the businesses open.

Attend the afternoon vespers in the crypt of San Miniato where Benedictine monks sing Gregorian chants. Every afternoon at 4:30.

Check hours first. Many of the museums and restaurants are only open during very short hours, or one certain days.

For the museum lovers, get to the Uffizi and the Palazzo Vecchio area, and the Duomo.

Florence needs time on its own.  It is a good centre to visit Pisa and Lucca by train (check train times on www.trenitalia.it ). Pistoia (23 miles north west of Florence) and Prato (11 miles north west of Florence) are two towns much neglected by tourists.

San Gimignano and Siena can be more easily reached by bus (Tra-in or Sita) and many hotels will arrange conducted coach visits with a guide.

Via Borgo Pinti 12/r - Florence - ITALY - Tel.-39-055/24.13.41 La Giostra is intentionally difficult to find. Outside the front door there is no sign. The street on which it is found is far away from the typical touristy routes. Yet it is only a few hundred meters from the Duomo, in the very center of Florence, in Borgo Pinti at number 12, near to the San Piero arch. In short, it is not a place for tourists, it is more a place for travelers. On foot: five minutes from the Duomo going along Oriuolo street.  Ten minutes from Repubblica square by taking Corso street, Borgo Albizi street and crossing the San Piero arch.  By car: follow the ring-road avenues (from north to south) toward Donatello square (English monumental cemetery), follow the indication for D'azeglio square and then take Borgo Pinti street.  An alternative is to leave the car at the Parterre parking-lot (Liberty square) and then take a taxi. By taxi: ten minutes from most of all central hotels, cost: not anymore 10 euros.

Trattoria Garga' Firenze
This is one of the best restaurants. RESERVATIONS a must. Not far from the Arno River.  Modern Art on the walls, small, intimate, noisy, and a local haunt. Not inexpensive...but worth it.

General Florentine shopping hours are daily from 9:30am to noon or 1pm and 3 or 3:30pm to 7:30pm - mid-afternoon riposo

La Rinascente is open from 9am to 9pm.

Markets -- Haggling is accepted and expected at most outdoor markets. Premiere Florentine market is the San Lorenzo street market, filling Piazza San Lorenzo, Via del Canto de' Nelli, Via dell'Ariento, and other side streets. Antiques along the Via Maggio and other Oltrarno streets. Also the less glitzy, Via de' Tornabuoni (Via Cerretani down Via Roma).

March through October, most stalls are open daily about 8am to 8pm depending.

Mercato Centrale indoor food market (between Via dell'Ariento and Piazza del Mercato Centrale). Downstairs you'll find meat, cheese, and dry goods. Oone stall devoted to tripe aficionados, a second piled high with baccalà (dried salt cod), and a good cheap eatery called Nerbone. Upstairs is devoted to fruits and veggies - eggplants, yellow peppers, mounds of artichokes, and pepperoncini bunched into brilliant red bursts. The market is open M-S from 7am to 2pm and Saturday also 4 to 7:30pm.

The cream of the crop of Florentine shopping lines both sides of the elegant Via de' Tornabuoni, with an extension along Via della Vigna Nuova and other surrounding streets. Here you'll find big names like Gucci, Armani, Ferragamo, and Mila Schön ensconced in old palaces or modern minimalist boutiques.
