For the museum lovers,
get to the Uffizi and the

Florence needs time on its own.
It is a good centre to visit Pisa and Lucca by train (check

miles north west of Florence) are two towns much neglected
by tourists.
San Gimignano and Siena
can be more easily reached by bus (Tra-in or Sita)
and many hotels will arrange conducted coach visits

La Giostra is intentionally difficult to find.
Outside the front door there is no sign. The street on which it
is found is far away from the typical touristy routes. Yet it is
only a few hundred meters from the Duomo, in the very center of
Florence, in Borgo Pinti at number 12, near to the San
Piero arch. In short, it is not a place for tourists, it is more
a place for travelers. On foot: five minutes from the Duomo
going along Oriuolo street. Ten minutes from Repubblica square
by taking Corso street, Borgo Albizi street and crossing the San
Piero arch. By car: follow the ring-road avenues (from north to
south) toward Donatello square (English monumental cemetery),
follow the indication for D'azeglio square and then take Borgo
Pinti street. An alternative is to leave the car at the
Parterre parking-lot (Liberty square) and then take a taxi. By
taxi: ten minutes from most of all central hotels, cost: not
anymore 10 euros.
Trattoria Garga' Firenze
This is one of the best restaurants. RESERVATIONS a
must. Not far from the Arno River. Modern Art on the walls, small, intimate, noisy,

Markets --
Haggling is accepted and expected at most outdoor
markets.
Premiere Florentine market is the San Lorenzo street
market, filling Piazza San Lorenzo, Via del Canto
de' Nelli, Via dell'Ariento, and other side streets.
Antiques along the Via Maggio and other Oltrarno
streets. Also the less glitzy, Via de' Tornabuoni (Via
Cerretani down Via Roma).
March through
October, most stalls are open daily about 8am to 8pm
depending.
Mercato
Centrale indoor food market (between Via
dell'Ariento and Piazza del Mercato Centrale).
Downstairs you'll find meat, cheese, and dry goods. Oone
stall devoted to tripe aficionados, a second piled high
with baccalà (dried salt cod), and a good cheap
eatery called Nerbone. Upstairs is devoted to
fruits and veggies - eggplants, yellow peppers, mounds
of artichokes, and pepperoncini bunched into brilliant
red bursts. The market is open M-S from 7am to 2pm and
Saturday also 4 to 7:30pm.
The cream of the
crop of Florentine shopping lines both sides of the
elegant Via de' Tornabuoni, with an extension
along Via della Vigna Nuova and other surrounding
streets. Here you'll find big names like Gucci, Armani,
Ferragamo, and Mila Schön ensconced in old palaces or
modern minimalist boutiques.
